Most people know that I am a huge fan of unexplained phenomena ... and this one is a doozy.
Most of you may or may not be aware of the discovery of an eleven-foot-tall metal monolith in a remote canyon in the Utah desert by a group of wildlife biologists evaluating the population of big horn sheep. The structure, which looks like one of the alien 'monoliths' from the 1968 Stanley Kubrick film '2001: A Space Odyssey', was apparently placed in the canyon sometime in 2016, a fact that was ascertained by a review of Google Earth images taken of the area.
Now here is the weird part, now only ten days after it was first discovered it has mysteriously disappeared.
The object has been linked to similar sculptures by artist John McCraken who passed away in 2011. Though the monolith in Utah resembles his sculpture 'Fair' the artists contemporaries have ruled out McCraken as the source.
Let us not forget that the object was placed in the desert five years after his death.
This leads to a list of unanswered questions:
1. If it is indeed a work of art, why was it placed in such a remote location that it took four years to be discovered?
2. Likewise, if it was some sort of publicity stunt why was it in such a remote local?
3. Did aliens leave it there?
4. Where the heck did it go?
It's the last part that gets me. Since it's discovery, several people were able to figure out where the monolith was and make a pilgrimage to see it. Also the Bureau of Land Management was notified about the object a were conducting an investigation about it's origin. Despite all of this someone, or some thing, was able to come in and remove it without being noticed.
I'm sure that the monolith will show up at a Star Trek convention near you soon.
