Louisiana's Hidden Gems: Downtown Lake Charles

Just off Interstate 10 and nestled on the shore of Lake Charles is a historic and vibrant downtown district. The area hosts several unique restaurants, antique stores, historic buildings and other various shops. Fans of historic buildings will delight in visiting the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse and adjacent City Hall as well as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The area is also a must see for fans of both street art and murals as well as eclectic shops and eateries.  As a California transplant I really enjoyed North Beach on Lake Charles with it's white sand and palm trees. It's not Newport Beach but it's as close as it gets in Louisiana and I was able to pretend that I was back on the West Coast for the moment. The Lake Charles area has been ravaged over the last couple of years by hurricanes and tornados and a large part of the area has not recovered. It is encouraging to see the downtown area flourishing under the adversity.   North Beach is t...

Great Cartoons of the 90s: The Anamaniacs in Star Truck

Kahn and Kirk are at it again and it takes the quick wits of Yakko, Wakko and Dot to save the Enterprise and it's crew. Star Truck was part of the 77th episode of Animaniacs that included segments entitled This Pun for Hire, Go Fish and The Multiplication Song which aired November 4th, 1995. Over the original run of Animaniacs the show's creators produced several well conceived parodies of Star Trek and its actors, namely William Shatner. After Kahn uses poison gas to knock out the crew of the Enterprise the Warner siblings use a secret weapon even Kirk didn't know about, a giant mallet that crushes the enemy ship like a cockroach under a Buster Brown. That little gizmo would have come in handy versus the Romulans, Klingons, Gorn, Tholians, colorful spinning cubes, giant hands, space Nazis and so on. Are You Ready For The Horror Of Octopuses From Outer Space

There has been a lot of press over the past week over a four year old scientific paper published in the Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology. Titled Cause of the Cambrian Explosion – Terrestrial or Cosmic ? Almost all of the content included in the paper is written in the typical scientific verbiage that puts an average person to sleep so let me break it down crib notes style. All life on Earth comes from intergalactic retroviruses and octopuses are actually alien life forms. "Thus the possibility that cryopreserved Squid and/or Octopus eggs, arrived in icy bolides several hundred million years ago should not be discounted (below) as that would be a parsimonious cosmic explanation for the Octopus' sudden emergence on Earth ca. 270 million years ago. Indeed this principle applies to the sudden appearance in the fossil record of pretty well all major life forms, covered in the prescient concept of “punctuated equilibrium” by Eldridge and Gould advanced in the early 1970...
