On June 13, 1982 A Legend Was Born - Ack!

On June 13, 1982 the greatest cat in the history of syndicated comics made his illustrious debut. From the first panel on it was obvious that Bill the Cat was destined for greatness. America had been waiting for a scrawny black and orange kitty with personality, a rugged John Cougar like appearance, possible mange, borderline mental illness and an I don't give a s**t attitude like Billy Joel. Bill would end up being all of these things and more.  After a decades long career that featured a gig as the front man of a failed rock band, a brief flirtation with communism and a political career that never quite made it past the boundaries of central Indiana, Bill the Cat has reached the legendary status normally only reserved for the likes of  Yahoo Serious, Judy Tenuta and the 80s punk band The Dead Milkmen.     Hey those guys are still rockin'! This is what the creator of Bloom County, Berkley Breathed, said about his most infamous creation: "As God is my witn...

All Monsters Attack (aka Godzilla's Revenge)(1969)(Toho)

Written By: Ken Hulsey I decided to pull this one out of the Monster Island News files and dust it off! This was originally written and posted way back in 2008.  I probably should have rewritten it but instead I decided just to edit it a bit to preserve the  content and feel of the original article. I hope you enjoy this blast from the past: You would be hard pressed to find a more misunderstood monster movie than Toho's 1969 entry into the long line of Godzilla films entitled All Monsters Attack (Godzilla, Minilla, Gabara: All Monsters on Parade or Godzilla's Revenge - US Title). Ask any Godzilla movie fan what he (or she) thinks of the film and you are likely to get a scorn remark and a sour face in return. The reasons for this very vocal backlash towards the film comes in many different forms for many different reasons. Mostly fans dislike this movie, because it is simply a movie made for children and not monster movie in a true sense at all, a fact that has somehow gotten ...

Flash Gordon in A Planet in Peril (1979)

Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, and Dr. Hans Zarkov, visitors from Earth, are traveling in a spaceship to the planet Mongo with a dire warning: The two planets will soon collide. However, as the ship approaches, the group is shot down by local forces, crashing in the ocean. They are saved by a group of Gill Men, insofar as they are saved from drowning; they effectively become part of the "catch of the day," alongside Prince Barin of the Arborians, and Prince Thun of the Lion-Men. The two of them, little as they can appear to stand one another, give them their introduction to Mongo: The planet is suffering under the tyrannical rule of self-proclaimed Ming the Merciless. However, all races on Mongo are enemies to one another; as a result, Flash observes, no matter how much any or each of them may hate Ming, they can never stand together against him.   Check Out: Retro Saturday Morning: The New Adventures of Flash Gordon (1979 - 1982 NBC) Josie and the Pussycats in The Nemo...

1947 was the year that a pilot spotted “saucer-like discs” in Washington and a rancher in Roswell, New Mexico, found some mighty strange debris

From The Vintage News The year 1947 is often marked as the beginning of our fascination with flying saucers and unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings. That is mostly because of two specific events, one seen from the air and the other on the ground. On June 24th of that year, Kenneth Arnold was flying his small plane across Washington State. It was a bright, clear day as Arnold described it. He was on his way to an air show in Oregon, but decided to do some exploring around Mount Rainier. The mountain was near a recent military plane disappearance, presumed crashed. A reward was being offered to anyone able to find the site of the crash. In the cockpit, Arnold saw a DC-4 aircraft flying about 15 miles away. Then he noticed something else. According to Arnold, a bright flash reflected light into his airplane. Looking around for the source of the reflection, Arnold spotted a group of nine objects flying close to Mount Rainier. They were all flying in the same formation, similar to a ...

The Forgotten Flintstones: When Fred Traded In Cigarettes For Jelly And Grape Juice Their Baby Went From A Boy To A Girl

From MeTV As many know, The Honeymooners inspired The Flintstones, but more specifically, the cartoon was a hybrid of the classic Jackie Gleason sitcom and popular newspaper comic strip. In his memoir Lou Scheimer: Creating the Filmation Generation, Scheimer, one of the creators of the Filmation animation studio, remembers the moment the light bulb went off over somebody's head. He was working for Hanna-Barbera at the time. "I was doing layouts in a little closet next to where the writers were," Scheimer recalled. "One day a writer named Charlie Shows came in…. He said, 'I've got a great idea! You take The Honeymooners , and you take Alley Oop, and you put them together, and you've got a great story!'" Launched in 1932, Alley Oop revolved around a caveman named Alley Oop living in a prehistoric kingdom of Moo. He wore a loincloth and owned a pet dinosaur named Dinny. Sound a little familiar? Discouragement: growing weary in well doing is a huge issue for so many

Fight:   The Bible says in Galatians 6:9 — Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. As believers we can get overwhelmed with the Christian life. We look and think, There is so much work to be done. There is a constant struggle between our flesh and the Spirit. Our flesh wants to go one way, while our spirit, if we are born again, wants to do something else. So, it’s a fight to do good, especially when we don’t believe it’s making a difference or we think, No one really cares about me. Rest: We all need to check ourselves from time to time. Sometimes we just get tired. We don’t rest properly. We need to get our rest, and at the same time do the will of God. If we do, God says we will reap a harvest at the appointed time — a harvest of good. Serve: We help others, and He helps us. So, He says, Don’t grow weary. Don’t be discouraged; never get tired of serving God and others. It can be difficult at times because t...
