Louisiana Utility Companies Are Screwing Over Their Customers - And Unfortunately They Are Okay About It

I was really struck by the first couple of paragraphs in this article by Bruce Mikells for KPEL. Though the purpose of article was to expose the exorbitant pay raises the CEO's at Entergy just received it was the author's blaze feelings about the company passing on billions of dollars of storm damage repairs on their customers that really got me. Mikells states: ... That company took a huge hit during the hurricanes of 2020 and 2021. They did suffer billions of dollars in damages and it's only fair that we, the people of Louisiana help shoulder some of the responsibility. Let's be clear costs to restore power service after a major storm usually falls on the consumer. In this case, it is estimated that Entergy will be passing along some $4.5 billion dollars damage costs that we will be paying over a period of several years. Most of us in Louisiana understand this and don't mind it. Whoa, hold your horses there cowboy. We certainly do mind when our power company pas...

Today In History: Civil War Dead Honored On First Memorial Day (1868)

From History.com By proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, the first major Memorial Day observance is held to honor those who died “in defense of their country during the late rebellion.” Known to some as “Decoration Day,” mourners honored the Civil War dead by decorating their graves with flowers. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery , after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Civil War soldiers buried in the cemetery. The 1868 celebration was inspired by local observances that had taken place in various locations in the three years since the end of the Civil War. In fact, several cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Columbus, Mississippi ; Macon, Georgia ; Richmond, Virginia ; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania ; and Carbondale, Illinois . In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon B. Johnson , decl...

My New Comic Book Obsession: Vampiress Carmilla

I made a wonderful discovery in the magazine section of my local Books-A-Million today. As my eyes danced over a fine selection of horror and sci-fi themed publications I suddenly felt like I had time traveled back to the 1970s. Right in front of me was a copy of Vampiress Carmilla Magazine that was an obvious homage to the classic Vampirella mags that I used to riffle through back when Smokey chased The Bandit. This was a tribute to the great magazines that were published by Warren that included the legendary titles Creepy, Eerie, Famous Monsters of Filmland and the afore mentioned Vampirella from cover to cover. I had to buy the three issues on the shelf (number 8, 9 and the 2023 Annual) and upon returning home I began a search for the issues published prior.  I also began to search for information about the publisher of Vampiress Carmilla, Warrant Publications which is another homage to Warren. I was actually surprised that there isn't much info out there. I was able to learn th...

Hot Traxx: The Top 10 Songs By The Pretenders Of All Time

Pretenders are an English–American rock band formed in March 1978. The original band consisted of founder and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde, James Honeyman-Scott, Pete Farndon, and Martin Chambers. 10. Night In My Veins (1994) When Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders wanted to write a hit song, she called on the songwriting team of Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly for help. Steinberg and Kelly had already written many hits, including "True Colors" and "Eternal Flame." Over a two week period, Kelly, Steinberg and Hynde wrote this song along with "I'll Stand By You," "Love Colors Everything," "977" and "Hollywood Perfume." Says Steinberg, "'Night In My Veins' really felt like a great Pretenders rocker, 'I'll Stand By You' felt a little generic. I know that Chrissie felt that way too to some extent." 9. Tattooed Love Boys (1979) This was part of the first Pretenders album, which many count among the ...

Today In History: Samuel Morse demonstrates the telegraph with the message, “What hath God wrought?”

From History.com In a demonstration witnessed by members of Congress, American inventor Samuel F.B. Morse dispatches a telegraph message from the U.S. Capitol to Alfred Vail at a railroad station in Baltimore, Maryland . The message—“What Hath God Wrought?”—was telegraphed back to the Capitol a moment later by Vail. The question, taken from the Bible (Numbers 23:23), had been suggested to Morse by Annie Ellworth, the daughter of the commissioner of patents. m  Morse, an accomplished painter, learned of a French inventor’s idea of an electric telegraph in 1832 and then spent the next 12 years attempting to perfect a working telegraph instrument. During this period, he composed the Morse code, a set of signals that could represent language in telegraph messages, and convinced Congress to finance a Washington-to-Baltimore telegraph line. On May 24, 1844, he inaugurated the world’s first commercial telegraph line with a message that was fitting given the invention’s future effe...

Decreased Electric Capacity Will Lead To Blackouts From Michigan To Louisiana This Summer Experts Say

If the power goes out here in Louisiana - and the air conditioning doesn't work this summer - I'm going to be renting me a moving van. (NEXSTAR) – Blackouts could plague a number of states in the U.S. this summer, regulators warn, as a combination of drought, heat, potential cyber attacks, geopolitical conflicts and supply chain problems could disrupt the power supply, according to a grim new report from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). The regulatory body found that large swathes of the U.S. and parts of Canada are at an elevated or high risk of energy shortfalls during the summer’s hottest months. The Midwest is at especially high risk due to the retirement of older plants, which has caused a 2.3% decrease in capacity from last summer, as well as increased demand, according to NERC. m In the Southwest, plummeting river levels may cripple hydropower production, the group warned, and in Texas drought-related heat events could cause extreme energy d...
