Last night I had the bright idea to share my classic article about the 1984 Japanese animated movie The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? on Facebook. The post prompted some really nostalgic banter from fans who loved the film. Most of the people who chimed it were confused at why the film had the title Macross instead of Robotech which is the name of a popular television series here in the US that took episodes from three different Japanese series and combined them into one. From talking to fans I was surprised to learn that all these decades later there were still some fans who didn't know that the first Robotech storyline was an Americanized version of the Japanese anime Macross. Likewise they were surprised to learn that subsequent stories came from the series Super Dimension Southern Cross and likewise Genesis Climber Mospeada.
I thought it would be fun to look at the original Japanese openings for these three series and see how they were mashed together to create the classic Robotech intro.
First is Macross:
Next is Super Dimension Southern Cross:
And now Genesis Climber Mospeada:
Put them all together and you get ...
It's great to see that so many fans still love the Robotech series that introduced many Americans to Japanese anime way back in the mid 1980s.
