10. A UFO Shoots Down Air Force Fighter Over Kentucky

In the late 1940s reports of UFO sightings across the United States were at an all-time high after the reported sighting of nine flying saucers over the Cascade Mountains of Washington and the reported crash of a UFO in Roswell, New Mexico. Though UFO reports from that era were rather benign, simply sightings of strange objects in the sky, on the afternoon of January 7th, 1948, things would take a possibly sinister, and fatal turn. Shortly after noon on that fateful afternoon many witnesses in western Kentucky sighted a large unidentified craft, between 250 and 300 feet in diameter souring above them at a fantastic speed.

9. The Conisholme Incident

Green, a reported UFO skeptic told the Lancashire Telegraph that at first there was only one object, but it was soon joined by several others. “As the first light, which seemed to follow the Rossendale Valley came closer at what seemed a considerable speed, it rose almost vertically over the other side of the valley above Scoutmoor Wind Farm, followed at regular two-to-three second intervals by a further eight identical objects." John Harrison, a local resident, describes what he saw that night, “It was huge. At first I thought it must have been a hole where the moon was shining through but then I saw the tentacles – it looked just like an octopus It was an incredible site; I have never seen anything like it before. I have no idea what it was, all I can say is what I saw”.

8. The Rougarou

The swamp creature is said to stand seven to eight feet in height, is covered in wet brown and black tangled hair and has glowing red eyes along with large canine-like teeth. The original monster was thought to have been born from a mutation. Victims might suffer the same fate if bitten by the beast or upon being cursed by a witch.

7. The Fontana Speedway Monster

The height of these sightings took place in the early 1960s when race patrons would regularly spot a giant, harry, Bigfoot-like creature crossing a field adjacent to the track in full view of the grandstands. The Bigfoot was seen so regularly that it earned the name "Speedway Monster". Though the animal was witnessed by hundreds of people, no one ever worked up the courage to investigate it. It is hard to speculate why a creature that is known for being reclusive and shy of humans would trek so close to a race track filled with people and to mention the load noise produced by the cars.

6. Bigfoot in Southern California

It may come to the surprise of those who follow stories about Bigfoot and other mysterious creatures that the first report of these creatures by European settlers did not come from the East Coast, Midwest, or even the Pacific Northwest. It actually came from southern California. In 1769, Spanish priests founded the first mission in San Diego. Local Gabrieleno Indians told the padres about "harry devils" that lived nearby. In fact according to written accounts, the Indians lived in fear of these large, foul-smelling, "wild-men" and refused to go anywhere near their reported home called "towis puki" (camp of the devil) on the southern bank of the Santa Ana River.

5. The Yucca Man

On a cold February night in 1971 a lone guard manned a post outside an armory on the outskirts of the Marine Base near Twenty-Nine Palms. Without warning the otherwise unearthly quiet was suddenly shattered when a large mass appeared out of the dark desert landscape. The guard raised his riffle and commanded the being to "halt". Much to the young mans surprise the large figure did not stop but instead charged right at him at an inhuman rate. As the figure grew closer the Marine realized what was approaching, rapidly, was not a man at all but a huge upright running hair covered creature. Paralyzed by shock the young guard stood his ground too frightened to move.

4. The Texas Big Bird

One of the first encounters was in the early hours of December 26, 1975 when a rancher named Joe Suárez discovered that a goat he had tied up in a corral in Raymondville, Texas (about 30 miles north of the Rio Grande in southeastern Texas), had been ripped to pieces and partially eaten by some unknown assailant. The goat had been mauled from the right side and was lying in a pool of blood with the heart and lungs missing with the snout bitten away. The blood was still wet and warm when police officers examined the carcass. They could find no footprints around the goat and concluded that a flying creature of unknown origin had caused the death.

3. The Amarillo Werewolf

In the dark and early morning hours of May 21 (around 1:25 a.m.), security cameras inside a perimeter fence at the Amarillo Zoo captured a strange image outside the zoo. Was it a person with a strange hat who likes to walk at night? A large coyote on its hind legs? A Chupacabra? It is a mystery – for Amarillo to help solve.

 2. The Albuquerque Lights

In August of 1980 my best friend, myself and members of our respective families witnessed a large glowing green orb in the night sky directly over Albuquerque. It hovered there, motionless, for well over an hour before it disappeared. Our first thoughts were that the object was a helicopter, though are minds soon changed because the object simply didn’t behave like a helicopter … and it didn’t make any noise. Generally, any aircraft flying over the city made some sort of sound that you could discern even from a long distance. The Rio Grande valley that Albuquerque sits in had great acoustics and sound would travel through the thin air and reverb off the Sandia Mountains.

1. The Roswell UFO Crash

In July 1947, something happened northwest of Roswell during a severe thunderstorm. Was it a flying saucer? Was it a weather balloon? What happened? The answer is, nothing for many years, until leading UFO researcher Stanton Friedman came across the story in the early 1980s and began the search for information and witnesses. That research brought him to Roswell looking for the public information officer who had been at Roswell Army Air Field in 1947. That officer was Lt. Walter Haut. He still lived in Roswell and remembered the press release and the orders from his commanding officer.

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
