Well with no preseason, and inter-squad scrimmage is our first clue as to how our team is shaping up:
From RamsWire
Van Jefferson shines again
Jefferson is quickly becoming one of the standout rookies for the Rams, consistently making plays in practicing and showing why L.A. was so high on the former Florida receiver in the draft. He caught a great touchdown pass from John Wolford against the backups, dragging his feet in the corner of the end zone for six.
As the night went on, he received reps against the first-team defense, with the coaches even matching Jefferson up against Jalen Ramsey. It was a good test for the rookie, and based on reports from SoFi Stadium, he had a phenomenal night.
More on Jefferson in a minute.
Nsimba Webster pushes for roster spot
Webster’s clearest path to the 53-man roster is as a return specialist, but he’s pushing to make the team strictly as a wide receiver. In the scrimmage, he caught a touchdown pass from Wolford from 2 yards out, working nicely in the red zone.
He also had a long kickoff return and is emerging as the Rams’ best option in that phase of special teams. Webster is a player that keeps receiving good reviews from reporters at practice and the scrimmage was no different.
Safeties star on defense
Much of the talk with the safeties has been about rookies Jordan Fuller and Terrell Burgess, and rightfully so. Fuller got a lot of first-team reps on Saturday night but Nick Scott was also a standout. The special teams ace played well at safety, according to reports out of the scrimmage, even picking off Jared Goff along the sideline.
Scott will do most of his damage on special teams, but anything he can do on defense is a bonus. He’s a rangy yet inexperienced safety who consistently finds himself around the ball. With Taylor Rapp out, Scott is making good on his opportunities.
Aaron Donald dominates
Not surprisingly, Donald was among the standouts from the game. He had a few sacks and forced a fumble on Cam Akers in the scrimmage, picking up right where he left off last year. Steve Wyche of NFL Network said Donald couldn’t be blocked.
He lined up at defensive end a few times in the scrimmage, too, which is a nice change-up for the prolific pass rusher. Sean McVay said after the game that Donald was one of the players who really played well. That’s hardly a shocker.
Of course Donald dominated ... he's a super human ... not a mere mortal.
John Wolford secured as QB2
Wolford has all but secured his spot as the No. 2 quarterback behind Jared Goff, continuing his solid play on Saturday night. He showed off his athleticism and speed during the scrimmage by rushing for about a 40-yard gain, and also threw a couple of touchdown passes – including the one to Jefferson in the back of the end zone.
McVay said after the scrimmage that Wolford has a little Doug Flutie in his game, which is quite the compliment for the young quarterback.
I've been a big fan of Wolford for a while now.
This video of the Shawn Jefferson and Josh Reynolds talking about their experiences in camp this year got me excited for the upcoming season. Watch as Jefferson blows by a defender for a catch!
