Today In History: The Final Battle Of The American Civil War Begins At Appomattox

From History.com On March 29, 1865, the final campaign of the Civil War begins in Virginia when Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant move against the Confederate trenches around Petersburg. General Robert E. Lee ’s outnumbered Rebels were soon forced to evacuate the city and begin a desperate race west. Eleven months earlier, Grant moved his army across the Rapidan River in northern Virginia and began the bloodiest campaign of the war. For six weeks, Lee and Grant fought along an arc that swung east of the Confederate capital at Richmond. They engaged in some of the conflict’s bloodiest battles at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor before settling into trenches for a siege of Petersburg, 25 miles south of Richmond. The trenches eventually stretched all the way to Richmond, and during the ensuing months the armies glowered at each other across a no man’s land. Periodically, Grant launched attacks against sections of the Rebel defenses, but Lee’s men managed to fend...

Sometimes To Serve We Just Need To Get Over Ourselves

Silverwood Lake - San Bernardino Mountains - California by Ken Hulsey   Today instead of sharing insights on scripture I want to share my own personal struggle with serving God. I recently decided to submit my life to God's will. I had come to the point in my life when I realized that when I don't consult God on matters, and do things my way, things generally end up all screwed up. When you make such a commitment to God you have be aware that He will make opportunities to test you on just how honest you were about it. Such was the case this past week. On Friday our son-in-law Steven Roberts, who is a pastor at Journey Church, called with a rather large dilemma. It seems that a rather large number flyers for the church's upcoming Easter celebration had yet to be distributed. Three-thousand to be precise. A number of church members had signed on board to hang the packets, which included a flyer, information about the church and three plastic eggs with candy inside, but had to...

The Midnight Special: The Who - Baba O'Riley

Tonight we have a true classic in every sense of the word for our third installment of the rock and roll showcase known as The Midnight Special. There were several epic albums released during the 1970s and some may argue that The Who's 1971 album entitled Who's Next was the cream of the crop. The first track on that album was a little song called Baba O'Riley which many fans erroneously believe is actually called Teenage Wasteland. I would poke fun but I actually thought that was what it was called that for years. So why is the song called Baba O'Riley?  We will get to that in a moment. Back in the day I had something that I now refer to as 'The Tape'. Don't let the fact that I named it confuse you, it's simply a cassette tape that I recorded some songs from a Los Angeles classic rock station. As you may imagine Baba O'Riley was one of those songs along with Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run, and the Rolling Stone's Emotional Rescue. I often r...

Hot Traxx: Japanese Breakfast - Be Sweet

Good morning! It's Friday so that means it's time for another episode of Hot Traxx.  I have to admit that picking a song to feature here is getting harder and harder because there is so much good new music out there. I guess it's ultimately a good problem to have. The song that I selected is Be Sweet by the indie pop band Japanese Breakfast. It's a really catchy tune and it doesn't hurt that the video for the song is a X-files parody. When ever this song comes on I turn the volume way up! Japanese Breakfast is the solo musical project of musician Michelle Zauner (born March 29, 1989). Under the alias, Zauner has released two studio albums: Psychopomp (2016) and Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017), with a third, Jubilee, announced for release in June 2021. Here is the Hot Traxx Top Ten for this week! 1. Back of the Bar - Black Honey 2. Bad Dream - Canons 3. Sprite - Coin 4. Close to You - Dayglow 5. Emotion - Molly Burch 6. Stay With Me - Hatchie 7. The Princes...

Knowledge And Wisdom Are Not The Same And The Difference Is More Than Profound

Rocks That Seem To Extend Endlessly Into The Pacific Ocean - Oceanside California - By Ken Hulsey  Huh! I should think that you Jedi would have more respect for the difference between knowledge and... heh heh heh... wisdom. - Dexter Jettster (Star Wars) Only this Space Cowboy would start off a post about wisdom with a quote from a Star Wars movie. It may be a sign that I need some of that elusive wisdom because I chose not to quote a wise Star Wars character like Yoda or Obi Wan Kenobi in favor of something uttered by an intergalactic fry cook in a movie that I don't particularly care for instead. Now that we have established how un-wise I am, let's delve into the meat of the matter. This week Terri and I started reading and studying the book of Proverbs. In case you are not familiar with that particular book of the Bible it focuses on ... you guessed it ... wisdom. Lets look at some definitions of wisdom. I will start with Wikipedia, which again proves that I may not be all th...

Ready For Something Weird? Check Out The Great Yokai War: Guardians

Back during my time running Monster Island News I had the pleasure of rubbing elbows with really great people in the movie and television industry. One of those great people is movie publicist Avery Guerra. If you have an independent fantasy or foreign film there is no one better in the biz than Avery at getting the word out about it. Avery still keeps me in the loop on a lot of this stuff even though I haven't written about these kinds of films in years. Today he sent something my way that I couldn't help but take a bite at. If you are looking for a movie that looks just plain crazy check out The Great Yokai War: Guardians  from Japanese film maker Takashi Mike. If you are familiar with Mike's prior films then you know he has a reputation for churning out some gonzo material. This film is no different. The trailer for The Great Yokai War: Guardians just dropped in Japan and it is too crazy not to write about. It starts out with a typical scene from a Japanese ...
