It's funny how your memory starts to fail you as you get older. I swore this show was called Baggy Pants and the Nitwits for some reason. That show was actually based on characters from the popular comedy/variety show Laugh-In. Todays cartoon is actually called The Oddball Couple and as you have probably guessed without me having to write anything at all it is based on the sitcom (that was based on a popular movie by the same name) The Odd Couple.
As I have discovered over the past few months there was a lack of creativity in regards to children's programing back in the 1970s. Maybe even less than there is today. It seemed that the standard rule for creating a cartoon series back then was to simply take a popular live-action show and make an animated version of it.
In case your not familiar with the either The Odd Couple, or it's animated facsimile, the concept is quite simple. You take one slovenly man, or in this case a dog named Fleabag, and place him in a living situation with a neat freak, in this case a cat named Spiffy, and hijinks ensure as the two clash over their lifestyles.
Unfortunately for the show most of the gags fell flat and kids really didn't fall in love the two reworked characters. The Oddball Couple only lasted sixteen episodes though, as was the practice back in the day, ABC continued to rerun them for a couple more years.
