Retro Saturday Morning: Take A Trip To "The Lost Island"

Unfortunately this is going to be a very busy Saturday so I won't be able to do one of my usual Retro Saturday Morning features. I did want to post something so instead of doing an in-depth feature I have opted to feature a really cool video clip I discovered on YouTube. It's from a feature that appeared in the 1978 series The Krofft Superstar Hour (later known as The Bay City Rollers Show) called The Lost Island,

"The Lost Island" featured a number of characters from other Krofft shows. Stories would somehow combine H.R. Pufnstuf, Enik, Sigmund the Sea Monster, and other unlikely characters into one storyline while they stay one step ahead of Dr. Deathray. Enik was the King of the Sleestak who lived within the Lost City and the island was also inhabited by dragons (utilizing stop-motion footage of Grumpy and Big Alice from "Land of the Lost").

 History:

The Krofft Superstar Hour is a Saturday morning children's variety show, produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. After eight episodes, the show was renamed The Bay City Rollers Show. It aired for one season from September 9, 1978 to January 27, 1979 on NBC. NBC also ran other repeat Krofft shows in an unrelated umbrella titled slot, Krofft Superstars, from 1978 to 1985. 

 The show is essentially a reworking of The Krofft Supershow, replacing the fictitious band "Kaptain Kool and the Kongs" with the real life Bay City Rollers. Just as on the previous show, the Rollers would perform comedy skits and musical numbers, and introduce the live action segments. The Bay City Rollers' segment also featured a character called Mr. Munchy in the main segment. 

 The regular live-action segments were "Horror Hotel" and "The Lost Island." Also included were reruns of "Magic Mongo" from the original Supershow. The show was cut back to 30 minutes after it was renamed The Bay City Rollers Show, and "The Lost Island" and "Magic Mongo" were dropped. The skits with the Rollers generally featured cameos by characters from other Sid and Marty Krofft shows, including Enik and the Sleestak from Land of the Lost, various characters from H. R. Pufnstuf, and Dr. Shrinker (now renamed Dr. Deathray) and his assistant Hugo (now renamed Otto).

"The Lost Island" also featured a number of characters from other Krofft shows on the Lost Island within the Bermuda Triangle. Stories would somehow combine H.R. Pufnstuf, Sigmund the Sea Monster, Weenie the Genie from Lidsville, a new character named Barbie, and other unlikely characters into one storyline while they stay one step ahead of Dr. Deathray and his henchman Otto. Enik from Land of the Lost was the King of the Sleestak who lived within the Lost City and the Lost Island was also inhabited by dragons (utilizing stop-motion footage of Grumpy and Big Alice from "Land of the Lost"). The good guys would often turn to the Island Spirit for advice on how to handle whatever plight they end up in. - Wiki

    I remember the Krofft Super Star Hour! I watched it every Saturday morning. I was around eight years-old. I remember both segments: Horror Hotel and Lost Island. I barely remember the latter since they dropped it so soon and so there didn't seem to be many episodes, but I remember watching the former all the time and loved it! Witchie Poo and her ghoulish staff were hilarious!

 About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
