It may be hard for many classic rock fans to remember that there was a Fleetwood Mac without (before) Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Today I was putting together a Fleetwood Mac playlist and I put on the band's 1972 album Bare Trees. I was honestly blown away by what a great album it is.
About half way through the tracks my ears perked up when I heard a song that I have loved for years called 'Sentimental Lady'. I had no idea that it was a Fleetwood Mac song, I always thought that it was recorded by Bob Welch?
I have to admit that until this afternoon I was pretty ignorant when it comes to the early days of Fleetwood Mac and after a little online research I learned that before Nicks and Buckingham ever auditioned for the band there was a great guitar player named Danny Kirwan and a singer named Bob Welch.
Yes, that Bob Welch.
The version that appears on Bare Trees was a minor hit for the band, but when Welch rerecorded it in 1977 (with Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood, Buckingham and Christine McVie) for his solo album French Kiss it became a Top 40 hit.
Here is a live performance of Sentimental Lady with Bob Welch fronting Fleetwood Mac:
