Getting its start in 1940 during the height of WWII, it was originally purposed to be a training air field for our nation’s defense. Even today, it remains the only air force base named after a naval officer. Seymour Johnson AFB also serves as the venue for North Carolina’s largest free air show in North Carolina, Wings Over Wayne Air Show.
