Wonder Woman by Heath Jet |
I'm going to state it right now, I am a huge Wonder Woman fan. I love everything from the classic comic books from the 40s, to the classic tv series staring Lynda Carter, and especially the modern movie incarnation starring Gal Gadot. So tonight I decided to do a little piece on Diana Price, I did a Google search I found two interesting items. The first was the amazing artwork above by the artist Heath Jet, which I would frame and hang in my man cave. A the second little tid-bit is an interesting article on Screen Rant by Joe Anthony Myrick who interviewed Wonder Woman comic book writer Tom King, who talked about what made her a different kind of superhero from both Superman and Batman.
Wonder Woman Wonder Squiggles T-Shirt - $21.99 @ Amazon.com - Order HereTom King - "I mean it comes from just, in the beginning, thinking of trying to differentiate Diana from Clark and Bruce. And having written Batman extensively and Superman quite a bit, it's hard on paper to be like: what makes her different? Why is she somehow — you know, she does all the right things. So does Superman. She never gives up. Neither does Batman. What makes her different from those two figures? And makes her distinct and cool and relevant today?"
He explained further, "My answer, and going back and reading her comics over the years, is she's a rebel in a way they aren't. In some ways Batman is about justice. He's about enforcing the law. He works with the cops. He’s about that. And Superman, who I absolutely adore, and he’s my favorite character in comics, I think Superman is for the status quo on some level. There is some part of him that is boring and stodgy, which is wonderful! It's why I love him.
But Wonder Woman is against the establishment. She's rebellious, she stands up. She doesn't want to enforce the system. She wants to make the system better for other people. And I think that distinguishes her. Out of the Trinity, that gives her a separate mission."
Okay, so Wonder Woman is rebel, I can get behind that! Tell me more Tom: "When I first conceived this book, I wanted to put her against an authority. I wanted to show how her values could triumph over values that were being forced upon other people against their will. And so using the old tactic of the United States government standing in for that ultimate authority was where we started, and that's where the Sovereign came from and AXE and all of that stuff."
This is a great interview and you really need to go over to Screen Rant and check it out - HERE
So there was a lot of flap this week about DC Comics announcing who is Wonder Woman's greatest foe of all-time, and it turned out to be ... (Ta Da!) ...Cheetah, which seems to be as futile and idiotic as DC Comics making an official announcement that Batman's greatest foe is the Joker. Honestly, I have no idea why DC decided to make that a publicity item to push this week, maybe all of their PR staff was out on vacation.
