From Travel Nevada:
Unexplained (and Uncommonly Curious) Nevada Destinations
In a state this vast, you’re bound to stumble across something a little out there.
Maybe it has something to do with our offbeat nature—the one that drove us to set up a mailbox for interstellar communication. Maybe it’s our Wild West past, which lives on (in a manner of speaking) in haunted museums and storied cemeteries.
Or maybe it’s the delightfully unexpected combination of contradictions you can only experience here. Five-star resorts and clown-covered motels. Wide-open spaces dotted with open-air art galleries. Atomic-blasted craters and larger-than-life landmarks. It’s a recipe for intrigue—and only-found-here adventures.
Pack your bags: Nevada’s oddest places will leave you wanting (and wondering) for more.
As a state founded by gold miners and cowboys, built up by casino magnates, and flocked to today by renegade artists and other modern freedom-seekers, “ordinary” has just never really been in the cards. And don’t get us wrong. We love our pristine scenery, world-class cuisine, and oh-so-many picture-perfect niceties. But at the same time, whether it’s a haunted clown-themed motel or a “forest” of junk car canvases, there’s another way of looking at things that’s clear to born adventurers hungry for something a little more savory in their future campfire tales: our quirks… are our perks. No matter if you’re deep down the Extraterrestrial Highway rabbit hole or just beginning to scratch the surface of Fremont Street, you’re never too far from some Weird Nevada landmarks that are just satisfyingly so unusual.
Brake for Art
A forest in the middle of the desert? It didn’t grow overnight, but the artists responsible planted vehicular seeds for decades of creative collaboration.
Alongside the tailing piles of the “Last Great Gold Camp”, get to know this open air art gallery one rusted out, perfectly teetering, partially buried junk car at a time. Part of the Goldfield scene for years, the International Car Forest of the Last Church was created by longtime Goldfield resident Mark Rippie, whose vision was to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s biggest car forest. Joined by artists Chad Sort and Zak Sargent, the three set to work, burying the noses of more than 40 vehicles. Take the speedy detour off US 95, throw it in park, and explore this forest of junk cars at one of the largest (and free!) open air galleries in Nevada.
All Things Alien
Along the eastern edge of the E.T. Highway, the Alien Research Center beckons with local Area 51 lore, one-of-a-kind souvenirs, and a two-story mascot.
Gleaming in the desert sun like an actual spaceship itself, plan to find a silver Quonset hut with a giant two-story silver alien ushering you in the door. As the gateway to the Extraterrestrial Highway and Area 51, the Alien Research Center is one Weird Nevada stop you’re definitely not gonna want to miss out on. Situated minutes from quiet Alamo, taking on the ET Highway road trip without a stop at the Alien Research Center is like hitting a pro baseball game and not getting the quintessential hot dog and beer.
