The railroad industry is often associated with powerful locomotives and hardworking men. However, many are unaware that women have made invaluable contributions to this field for over a century. For instance, a woman invented the crossing gate, and another pioneered the development of greased wheel bearings - innovations that have profoundly shaped the railroad's history and evolution.
"We've Been Working on the Railroad!" is a presentation that shares the rarely told story of the women who kept the country's railroads running. The presentation celebrates the history of women's contributions to the railroad industry. Join Mandy Lockaby, a female freight conductor for BNSF Railways, as she brings these pioneering women back to life and shares her own experiences working on the rails.
Mandy Lockaby has worked as a conductor for BNSF since 2013. During her tenure, she has earned an associate's degree in business and is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in operations management for logistics and transportation. Mandy's passion for the railroad extends beyond her day job - she serves on the executive board of the Slaton Harvey House, where she shares her enthusiasm with others who are dedicated to preserving an important piece of West Texas railroad history. Adding to the family legacy, Mandy's husband also works for the railroad as an engineer, making them Slaton's first husband-and-wife train crew, affectionately known as the "love train" when they work together.
