Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey
Nestled between the Texas towns of Texarkana and Domino lies a place of tranquility and natural splendor - Wright Patman Lake. Formed by a dam built by the Army Corps of Engineers on the Sulphur River, this majestic lake had long piqued my curiosity as I passed the exit while driving to Domino.
Finally, I carved out time to explore the area. Turning off the highway, I drove back into the woods until I reached the base of the dam. The road then steeply climbed onto the dam itself, offering my first breathtaking view of the lake. Unfortunately, there was no pullover spot to snap photos from the dam.

Continuing on, I soon came upon the offices of the Army Corps of Engineers. There, a lovely meadow on the hilltop provided a stunning vantage point of the water and surrounding forest. As I strolled into the grass, the serene sounds of chirping birds and the pleasant aroma of spring flowers filled the air. It was a truly tranquil oasis.
Laying down to photograph some spring blooms with the lake in the background, I was overcome with a sense of contentment. I could have happily whiled away the entire day there, needing only a tent, sleeping bag, and some supplies. But alas, I had to return to Domino for work.
On my way out, I noticed locals fishing at the base of the dam, where the water flows into the Sulphur River. The fishing seemed plentiful, with people reeling in catches left and right. For all you anglers out there, I can't recommend this spot enough.
My experience at Wright Patman Lake was simply wonderful, and I know I'll be back again soon on my travels through the area.
