Over the past couple of months I have been posting about amazing places to visit in my adopted home state of New Mexico. I often refer to the state 'as the most beautiful place in the United States of America ... that you don't even know exists.' And that's a proven fact. Over the decades I have often told people about New Mexico's endless natural beauty and amazing historical landmarks only to be confronted by confused looks.
"New Mexico, where is that?"
"You say that it's a state?"
"Do you mean Mexico? It's part of Mexico right?"
If I was talking to someone in say, Delaware, or some state on the East Coast I may understand statements like that, but I was talking to people in Texas and California. Texas is literally next door and people still didn't know it was there.
I used to joke about New Mexico license plates that said 'New Mexico USA', but the addition of USA is actually warranted.
I wanted to do my part to promote the state and help people learn about it's hidden treasures so I began to write a series of 'Visit New Mexico' articles. This past week I stumbled upon a new campaign here in Louisiana to promote tourism called 'Louisiana is a Trip! Take One Today.' I found the campaign somewhat lacking but it did provide me some inspiration. I decided to come up with my own catch phrase for promoting New Mexico tourism, 'Discover New Mexico: Adventure Awaits You!" It is my hope that the slogan that I came up with catches on ... maybe even as an official state advertising campaign.
I decided to drop 'visit' from my blog titles and replaced it with 'discover'. True, I want people to visit New Mexico, but I think that is better that they first discover things about it.
Unless I missed something, New Mexico doesn't presently have an official tourism campaign with radio and TV spots designed to draw attention to the state like California (like they need one) or even Louisiana.
Maybe it's about time that there is one!
If you like what I am attempting to do here, please share this article on your social media accounts. If you want to be bold enough to share it with elected officials ... maybe even the Governor? ... you have my blessing. I would really love for this idea to take off!
