This past Sunday my wife and I stumbled upon reruns of the classic TV show Wild Kingdom (Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom) on the RFD network. We had both grown up watching the program so we were delighted to watch back to back episodes.
My impression of the show really highlights just how great educational and documentary programing actually was some forty and fifty years ago, Modern shows simply can't compare. In the one hour of Wild Kingdom that we watched we both learned more about animals than we had in any television program since. We actually saw several species of animals that we had never heard of and discovered facts about more common ones that we never knew.
It's no wonder that our generation grew up to be much smarter than the ones who followed.

That's actually one of the episodes we watched.
And that was the other. I'm sure that you learned a lot about animals like we did.
In later episodes host Marlin Perkins, who was getting on in years, took on a more supervisory role while Jim Fowler did the dirty work.
I often joke: "I'm Marlin Perkins. While I sit here in the jeep drinking a martini my partner Jim will wrestle a full-grown male lion. Let's watch... don't be a wuss Jim."
No really, it was vey much like that.
I got a hold of Mutual of Omaha's press release about the show:
Long before the days of the internet and online streaming, families gathered around their television on Sunday evenings and tuned in to “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.” It was a simple and magical time.
Beginning this Sunday, April 4, the magic of “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” is returning to television on RFD-TV. Airing each week in its original time slot of 7 p.m. CT, viewers will enjoy the original episodes, including updated content from Peter Gros, co-host of the original Wild Kingdom.
“I have such fond memories of my time filming the original Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler,” said Gros. “I look forward to continuing their legacy by educating a new generation about the importance of protecting our natural world.”
According to Keith Clark, Mutual of Omaha senior vice president of brand management, Wild Kingdom holds a special place in Mutual of Omaha’s history, as well as its future.
“When we announced our new logo in November of 2020, it was no coincidence that it featured a lion,” Clark said. “Our logo embodies our rich Wild Kingdom heritage while also reflecting our mission to help protect our customers and what’s important to them. Getting Wild Kingdom back on television is just the first step in an exciting revitalization of this important brand asset.”
“RFD-TV is all about family-oriented programming, and we are so proud to be able to have Wild Kingdom anchor our new Sunday night, prime-time lineup,” said Patrick Gottsch, founder and president of Rural Media Group. “Those who grew up watching Wild Kingdom have such fond memories of seeing the world through the eyes of Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler. On behalf of RFD-TV’s millions of excited television viewers and digital audience, I want to thank Mutual of Omaha for making this iconic series available again.”
