If you have been following this blog, and my restaurant reviews, then you know that I have been on a quest for five years to find Mexican Food on par with what I used to enjoy out west. In my culinary adventures here in the Pelican State I have managed, through trial and error, to find a handful of decent places to grab some south of the border inspired meals. Though the food has been good, it simply didn't excite my taste buds the way that I had become accustomed.
This past week Terri and I had to travel down to New Orleans for a doctor's appointment and on our way back we decided to do some shopping in Baton Rouge. As the day came to a close we decided that it was time for some dinner and we started to put our minds together to figure out what we wanted to eat. We had somewhat reluctantly decided upon Jersey Mike's but silently we we were both trying to come up with another alternative.
As we began to exit Siegen Lane Marketplace, Terri spotted a new Pedro's Mexican Restaurant and suggested that we just eat there. Always up for Mexican Food, I pulled in.
Terri and I often frequent the Pedro's here in Alexandria, but to be honest, the food has just been so-so lately, yet I was still open to giving this location a try.
I am so happy that we did!
I opted to have the Fish Tacos and Terri ordered the Chicken Quesadilla. Within minutes our server brought us the traditional chips and salsa appetizer, which of course was expected, but along with it came a small bowl of hot bean dip. I always enjoy the salsa at Pedro's, but this bean dip was simply out of this world. It was really hard to keep from from gobbling up a belly full chip and dip before the main course arrived.
Somehow, I managed to pull it off.
When our meals arrived Terri and I were really impressed by how our food was presented on our plates. Terri's Quesadilla was sliced pizza style and the slices were placed like a pinwheel around a Guacamole Salad in the center. My Fish Tacos came in three slot holder, with individual bowls of Spanish Rice and Homemade Beans. There was a cup of spicey sauce and some Pico de gallo for the tacos. All of this came on a serving tray. All nice and neat.
I sat there for a second and gazed at my tacos. Before me sat three tacos that appeared to be the Baja Fish Tacos that Terri and loved back in California. There was white fish and cabbage in corn tortillas which certainly looked the part. I poured an ample amount of white sauce onto my first taco and took a bite.
I think that I had some sort of out of body experience or something!
Praise God, it was exactly the kind of fish taco that I had been searching Louisiana for these past five years! It was just about perfect in every way. Was it as good as a Fish Taco from Rubio's Coastal Grill? Not quite, but it was darn close and it was simply delicious!
What I failed to notice while I was having my own personal foodgasm was that my wife was also making some kind of yum yum yum sounds across the table from me. She offered me a bite of her Quesadilla and I have to admit that it may have been the best that I ever tasted and Terri agreed.
My rice was nice and fluffy and those home made beans were the perfect compliment to my tacos.
We both enjoyed our meals so much that we couldn't stop talking about it after we left. We made a pact to eat there every time we pass through Baton Rouge.
To sum it all up, the food was excellent, the service was good, the atmosphere was great and the price was very reasonable.
