From Rachel at Visit Albuquerque
Albuquerque offers far more than just summer fun. In fact, the nearby Sandia and Manzano mountains provide plenty of ways to embrace the winter weather and snow, from skiing and snowshoeing to sledding. And don't forget to warm up with some delicious local chile at the end of the day.
Think Albuquerque is just a summer destination? Think again! The city and its surrounding mountains have a wealth of cold-weather activities and adventures to enjoy throughout the winter months. From hitting the slopes to trekking through the powdery snow, there are endless opportunities to revel in the high desert's chilly beauty. Just be sure to cap off your snowy explorations with a hearty bowl of spicy, steaming-hot chile - a local favorite that's sure to thaw you out.
Albuquerque is surrounded by some of New Mexico's premier ski resorts. Take a quick drive to Sandia Peak or Ski Santa Fe and hit the slopes! If cross-country skiing is more your style, head to the mountains surrounding Albuquerque, where you'll find great trails in the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. As you drive up the Sandia Mountain pass (Scenic Byway 536), you can access ungroomed trails at the 10K and Ellis Trailheads, as well as from the Sandia Crest parking lot and Upper Tramway terminal at Sandia Peak. At the 160-acre Manzano Mountain State Park in Mountainair, about five miles of beginner-friendly trails are perfect when the snow conditions are right.
Just southeast of Albuquerque, you'll find great views and fun trails. Head to the east side of the Sandia Mountains to find perfect slopes for sledding and tubing. When the snow falls, the Capulin Snow Play Area in the Cibola National Forest is a local favorite spot for family fun in the snow.
The Sandia Mountains and Cibola National Forest offer many opportunities to trek through the winter on snowshoes. The 10K and Ellis trails off Scenic Byway 536 are perfect for strapping on your snowshoes while enjoying fantastic mountain and city views. You can rent snowshoes or join a guided tour with Routes Bicycle Tours and Rentals or MST Adventures.
Take the scenic drive up the Crest Road on the east side of the Sandia Mountains. At the top, you'll be rewarded with an unbeatable view of the city below, the snowcapped mountain peaks, and the crisp, fresh air. Dress warmly and drive carefully - the mountain peak sits at an impressive 10,300 feet.
For a different perspective, ride the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway and soar above the deep canyons and breathtaking terrain of the Sandia Mountains. Catch the tram on a snowy day to take in those incredible vistas blanketed in beautiful white powder.
After a long day of playing in the snow (or if snow isn't your thing), warm up at one of the Albuquerque area's favorite spas or hot springs. And don't forget to indulge in some classic New Mexican fare - there's no better way to thaw out than with a hearty serving of red or green chile.
