Earlier today Toho released the first teaser trailer for their Godzilla reboot entitled - Godzilla Minus One. In an interesting marketing move the famed Japanese movie studio released an actual teaser trailer for today's teaser trailer 24 hours prior. That clip simply featured a countdown of all the prior Godzilla films from the 2016 film Shin Godzilla at number 29 all the way down to the original 1954 Gojira (Godzilla) at number one. The countdown then goes to zero, leading many fans and journalists to speculate that the new film would be entitled Godzilla Zero, and then into negative numbers. What was lost on almost everyone was the true meaning of the countdown which signified that Toho was rebooting the Godzilla movie series starting with this movie.
There isn't much to see here, which is the case with all teaser trailer, but there is plenty of action crammed into those thirty-five seconds. The trailer starts off with a couple of scenes of a war ravaged Japan, then things explode into action abruptly. There is Godzilla's tail whipping through buildings, a train car crashing to the ground, the earth opening up under terrified citizens, and Godzilla's feet stepping on even more fleeing citizens. It's everything a monster movie fan would want and more.
It is apparent that this is indeed a remake of the original Godzilla film and this short clip is filled with many not so subtle clues. First is the sound of Godzilla's footsteps crashing down, which are the same sound effects from the opening of the original film. The train car crashing to the ground was also in a scene from the original. The film's logo which is simply a letter 'G' is an homage the 54 film that was originally known as simply 'G' during production. I'm not saying that Godzilla Minus One will be a direct remake, but it is more than obvious that many scenes in the film will pay a direct homage to the original.
Prepare yourself for several seconds of pure monster mayhem!
