Here is a flashback article I posted ten years ago today. I hope you enjoy it.
Is this 1992 or 2012?
Earlier this month I reported that the BNSF yard and offices in La Mirada, Ca were a haven for vintage Santa Fe power. At the time of my previous article the yard was stocked with a plethora of locomotives and a caboose whose origins echoed back to the old ATSF of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of this equipment had been repainted in new BNSF colors while others still wore their original Santa Fe paint.
Upon returning this week I was treated to a whole new set of locomotives and yet another pair of cabooses. What was different this time around was the fact that everything that was hanging around La Mirada on this cloudy spring day was pure Santa Fe. Warbonnet fans would really delight at the sight of four GP60s in their original colors all idling waiting to be called into service.
Though it is indeed 2012 this scene could have very well taken place back in 1992. If you don't look to closely and you ignore the big red "BNSF" lettering on the side of one GP60M you could convince yourself that is was indeed the early 90s and these locomotives may be waiting to provide power to a train on Santa Fe's famed "Super Fleet" instead of a small local or performing mundane switching duties.
Wanna time travel? Put on some Nirvana or Pearl Jam while you take a look at these photos. I've often though that La Mirada smelled like "Teen Spirit".
The Burlington Northern and the Santa Fe merging? Bah, that will never happen! Remember when they tried to merge with the Southern Pacific?
If ya loved the Santa Fe you'll love these pics!
