Round 2 Pick 36 - JAHMYR GIBBS RB ALABAMA
I know that I am going to get a lot of flack for mocking a running back to the Rams with the number 36 pick. It may indeed sound like a crazy scenario for Alabama rusher Jahmyr Gibbs to end up lining up behind Matthew Stafford but I have been thinking about this one for weeks now and I believe this selection fills and important need in the Rams offense.
Over the past couple of seasons the Rams have been waiting patiently for Cam Akers to develop into a top tier ball carrier and though he has shown flashes from time to time and had strong finish in 2022 I don't believe that that team is 100% sold on him.
For Sean McVay's offense to execute at top efficiency there needs to be a player that can provide both explosive runs and catch passes out of the backfield. Early in McVay's tenure as coach that player was Todd Gurley and over the past few years since his departure the team has searched for someone to match his skill set and failed. Gibbs my very well be that player.
In recent interviews the Rams brass has stated that this draft would be about pass rushers and pass catchers. Many believe that a pass catcher selection would be either a wide receiver or tight end, but I believe that a pass catcher out of the backfield may be in line with what the Rams are looking for.
Another reason that I think that Gibbs may be someone the Rams covet is the fact that he has been called a faster Deebo Samuel by many draft experts. After facing a player like Samuel at least twice a year the Rams are more than aware of what that type of havoc a player like that can inflict on an NFL defense. To put it bluntly Samuel is a nightmare to defend.
I think that the Rams would do anything to be able to give their rival 49ers a heaping handful of their own medicine on gameday.
Round 3 Pick 69 - ISAIAH FOSKEY DL/EDGE NOTRE DAME
Again, keeping with the theme that the Rams are looking for pass rushers and pass catchers I went with Isaiah Foskey as a replacement for the departed Leonard Floyd with this selection. Foskey's size and skill set would make a nice addition to the Rams defensive front opposite the surprising Michael Hoecht.
If there is run at edge rushers in this draft Foskey could be long gone before pick 69 but most sites I visited have him ranked about pick 73 on their bords so if he is there the Rams should pounce.
Round 3 Pick 77 - TUCKER KRAFT TE SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
Once again I'm breaking with what would seem as a more pressing need in the defensive backfield to add another weapon on offense. There certainly will be some quality corners still on the board at 77 but this is a McVay lead team and finding a tight end to complement Tyler Higbee is another necessary piece that makes his offense more efficient. Like the departure of Todd Gurley the loss of a second receiving tight end like Gerald Everett has been something the Rams have failed to replace.
The Rams did acquire Hunter Long in the trade with the Dolphins but he isn't a proven commodity and I'm certain that the team isn't going to trust that he will suddenly have a break out year 2023.
Like any good gambler I believe that the Rams will hedge their bet and add another tight end prospect.
