This week I received this email from Rio Grande Foundation President Paul Gessing about their efforts to derail a proposed $70 million soccer stadium that would be built in downtown Albuquerque. I have to admit that when I first heard about these stadium plans I was torn. On one hand Albuquerque could use another attraction to draw possible new residents and tourist dollars for the city. After I thought about it further and I listened to RGF's argument that tax dollars could be better allocated for other more pressing needs like hiring more police to help fight the city's crime problem I changed my mind on the matter.
From Paul Gessing:
Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller has decided that, despite rampant crime and a homeless problem that has grown dramatically worse on his watch, building a new soccer stadium for New Mexico United should be a top city priority. The stadium itself, to be located somewhere in the vicinity of Downtown, will cost taxpayers in excess of $70 million. That doesn’t include land acquisition, parking or inevitable cost overruns. We have a plan to concentrate resources on educating voters directly through direct mail. By donating to today, every dollar you give allows us to send 5 pieces of mail. You read that right: $1 = 5 postcards! And the more mail we can get out the door, the more effective we can be in overturning this wasteful stadium idea.
We must convince the voters to reject this outrageous proposal and the team at the Rio Grande Foundation is prepared to engage with voters now through election day. We have no time to spare. Can I count on your support?
It's easy to donate online. Just go here: https://donate.riograndefoundation.org/your-donation/
We need to send a clear message to Mayor Keller that taxpayer-funded stadiums are losers and that enough is enough.
