If you have any doubts that it is indeed Fall in Southern Louisiana a trip to Fresh Pickin's Produce Market in Lafayette will clue you in to the seasonal change. Though the temperatures are just starting to cool down and the leaves are still mostly green this fruit and vegetable stand (that's what we used to call a place like this in the good old days) is full of Fall colors. The oranges of pumpkins and the reds. yellows and browns of gourds and Indian corn delight the visual spectrum.
Fresh Pickin's is one of those old fashioned kind of places that are slowly disappearing in our online shopping world. It's the kind of place where you can still find a tomato and an onion the size of a softball and pick up a pack of tortillas that are as soft as the day they were made. There is every kind of local sauce and seasoning that one could imagine along with good old peach and apple butter. There are bins full of shelled nuts and there even coconuts and pineapples if you are in the mood for something tropical and sweet.
For a photo junkie like me Fresh Pickin's provided me the opportunity to get some shots of all the various colors and textures of the fruit, vegetables, and other produce. Many photographers may shy away from taking pictures of a bin full of eggplant but I delighted in it. Maybe I was just overwhelmed in a moment of nostalgia or something. Regardless of motivation I took full advantage of my visit to take these photos along with purchasing those giant tomatoes and soft tortillas.
